About me

Air travel is the most environmentally destructive method of mass travel ever devised and the fastest growing sector of human activity contributing to climate change. It is industrial excess at its worst. As I live in the most remote place on earth, commonly accessible only by air, I won't be traveling much in the future. I'd encourage you to do the same and to not come here. Go somewhere on a train instead. But if I fail in talking you out of it I might be able to show you around the Big Island. We are all environmental criminals to some degree.

September 20, 2014 - I just got back home after nine months living at a hospice in Kiel, Germany with my best friend, Sonja Schmelter:

https://www.couchsurfing.org/people/strandbad

Sonja died very peacefully August 30th after a year long illness with brain cancer. Though this may sound odd, the past nine months were the happiest time of my life. Being with Sonja at the end of her life was a unique privilege. She never lost her twisted sense of humor and remained a sweetheart to the end. The world is a better place because Sonja was here.

I've hosted over 2,000 travelers during the last five or 6 years, as many as 15 in one night. Sonja was one of my favorites. I met most of them through couchsurfing.org. I have over 300 positive references from Couch$urfing guests. You can see my Couch$urfing profile at:

http://www.couchsurfing.org/people/boblee/

I think am still the most experienced Couch$urfing host in the state of Hawaii, though I have not hosted through Couch$urfing for years . Also I am possibly the most experienced BeWelcome host in the state of Hawaii.

I'd now prefer to host through other sites such as this one. I feel that couchsurfing.org is headed in an unfortunate direction. I'm anticipating that one day I may need to (or may be forced to) end my association with them. So be it. Couch$urfing has transmogrified into something I didn't really sign up for. Some details of this can be seen at:

My home is a gay friendly area. Mormons or others who choose to discriminate against gays or are not comfortable around them are not welcome here.

If you are a "spiritual seeker", dogmatically religious, a political "conservative", a defender of our (now former) president (Obama) (the only Nobel laureate who maintained an assassin's kill list), a fan of Ayn Rand or a follower of the Dalai Lama, I will probably make fun of you.

To all: I don't respect your beliefs. I subscribe to Nietzsche's definition of faith: "Faith is not wanting to know what is true". Faith distinguishes only that which is emotionally comforting, with a disregard for that which is true. I'm a big fan of reality even though it can be a bit discomforting. I define reality as that which continues to exist when no one believes in it any longer.

The universe was not created for us and clearly does not acknowledge human values. Be helpful. Be nice. Share what you have. Keep it simple. Tread lightly on the earth. Hasa Diga Eebowai!

My interests

Hobbies:

- Motorcycles, the greatest dangerous toys ever! I just sold my 2006 Suzuki DL650 V-Strom and 2009 Suzuki DR650 DualSport. Though I am a lifelong rider I can no longer justify recreational use of carbon fuel. But I remain obsessed with two wheeled toys. I still own a classic French Velosolex moped and a Stromer electric bicycle. I limit the Velosolex to a maximum 1/2 gallon of fuel per year and will not be riding the eBike much until I can set up a solar charging system.

- Hosting Travelers

- CNC small volume manufacturing. I had a small machine shop in my home for 10 years. I made mostly tattoo machines, custom motorcycle parts and jewelry.

- Social Experimentation

Books:

Currently reading Sapiens, A Brief History of Humankind, by Yuval Noah HarariI

But I mostly mostly read documentary true crime, the most accurate and revealing historical genre if you have an interest in quotidian reality.

Music:

tUnE-yArDs, Die Antwoord!, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Cake, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Bloodhound Gang, Phoenix, Modest Mouse......

Films:

Inside Job, Idiocracy, Team America World Police, Surviving Progress, Crazy Love, The Queen of Versailles, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Our Brand Is Crisis, Kingpin, Walk Hard, Pink Flamingos

Organisations I belong to:

Church of Motorcycles and Beer, BNATST (But Not At The Same Time)

Travel experiences

Past trips:

Vietnam, Japan, Mexico, mainland US, Germany

Planned trips:

None. Air travel is very stupid and irresponsible, especially when living here in the most remote place on earth.

Against Couchsurfing

I am the most experienced CouchSurfing host in the state of Hawaii. See: https://www.couchsurfing.org/people/boblee/ When I signed up 4 years ago I saw CouchSurfing as an alternative to the thin, often fraudulent cyber-socializing of Facebook and other social media. At that time I saw it as a simple, pure exchange of goodwill. Unfortunately CouchSurfing is now an associate of Facebook. This may partly explain the growing numbers of flaky or unresponsive users.

Facebook is a devious agent of consumer culture, a veiled hustle. I don't hustle anyone ever. I'm not comfortable being part of anyone else's hustle.
