Day 14 by mirto

Lyon - ToursSo my goal was to get to Brittany (Bretagne). I could have followed highway up to Paris and then to Rennes, but as I know by heart l'Autoroute de Soleil, I have chosen a way just a bit longer, but through regions I didn't know. I was still hoping to make this 700km that day. As one of my first rules of hitchhiking is to Enjoy, and not to hurry, of course it took me 2 days. Luckily! Hitching out of Lyon wasn't as bad as someone says on hitchwiki. From bus stop in city centre I got a ride to gas station 12km further. I met there nice Canadian couple going to Spain. Now, my mission was to get to StEtienne. It wasn't easy, as all cars were going towards Mediteranean Sea. Holidays. After a while I stopped asking, not to loose my hope - I prefered to believe that maybe some of those cars were indeed going my direction and just didn't want to stop, then hear that all of them were headind south south. So I was waiting when a small lorry stopped nearby. Driver was going my direction, but first had to return to Lyon to pick up some forgotten things. As I knew already I wouldn't get that day to Brittany and driver seemed nice, I took this ride. So after an hour I was back to Lyon :P Driver was really friendly and I continued 50km more with him, even though it wasn't anymore on my way. Views were worth it! Puy-en-Velay is not really interesting itself, but there are many pilgrims passing by, on their way to... Santiago de Compostella. Afterwards my driver invited me to his place. I kindly refused, as it was early afternoon and I hoped to get a bit further. I got off at the beginning of Clermont Ferrand, which was a mistake. From there almost no one would go up south to the highway. After hour waiting a car stopped. Elderly male driver said he would drive me to Tours (as was stated on sign I was carrying). While driving he started very soon with not ambigious propositions and obviously he wasn't going to Tours. But he drove me at least to nearest péage in my direction. I could ask myself where were my instincts, that I got into this car. Yet - nothing bad happenned and I got out of this lousy spot! And this péage turned out to be very good place. Next car was really going to Tours. But this time in real, even though it was again elderly male driver ;) At gas station we stopped for a coffee, we met 3 other hikers going opposite dirrection than mine. But as it was getting late I started reconsidering if I maybe better stay with them there overnight, as it would be deffinitely nicer then sleeping in a ditch in Tours. But my driver invited me to his place - he must have been seriously bored with driving alone! He called his wife to prepare room and dinner for his guest. When we got there and she found out I was young female hitchhiker, she wasn't delighted. Next morning I discovered how big trust they gave

Dunkerque - CoventryHitchhing through the Channel was a piece of cake.Ferry looked different, without Florian and Nessy and special relation born between them. Once again I got invitation to drivers' place, but I menaged to get home. Many things from the beginning of the journey appeared as wall at the end. Similar situations, people... Mirror or frame? End of trip.
