Forum: daily/weekly digest, only participating thread notice, ...

posted 2012/06/16 19:51    Visibility: World

Hello,

I subscribed to many forum topic/groups and for now, if I enable email, I got instant email ...

Except for a few one, I would prefer avoiding filling my mailbox and be able to configure no/instant/daily/weekly digest.

Anything like this planned ?

Julien

Note: this question has probably been already asked but is there a reason to code your own forum and not using existing one like phpbb or others ? not enough choice ;-) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Internet_forum_software_%28PHP%29

It exists on couchsurfing.org, even if now it works rather worse than two years ago.

As here on the majority of groups, messages are not frequent, when there are some, it is not a big problem if daily oy weekly digest are not yet provided.

But it would be nice to make that working later.

Another problem witch also concern instant message notification, is that if à first version of a message is sent folowed by some corrections, that will do 2 messages sent to recipients with often few differences between them. It would be beter to delay (of one hour) new messages notification. So if the message is changed only the last version would be sent by email.

A little the same if the message is written several languages. Not worth to send everybody every versions in all languages.

If daily or weekly digest are done, it would be necessay to get the real content of messages. Not links asking to connect to bewelcome (like couchsurfing.org does now for it's groups).

According to the other question about the choice of a forum software : I think a quality of bewelcome.org website comparing to the two others websites about hosting travellers is to permit the write the same informations on several languages. I don't think PHPbb offerts this fonctionnality and not sure either PHPbb allows daily or weekly digest by emails.

Bewelcome forum software works (with some bugs to fix like if the messages starting a discussion is edited, the discussion will leave its original group). But it does not seem usefull to change the forum software, this one has qualities that I did not find somewhere else.

I agree that for now, the problem is limited as there is few messages but if BW grows, it will become more strongly needed.

On instant message, I already got 2 email, one for your french message and another for the english. you can have a checkbox to send only first post and only one edit per x hour (?6h, 24h)

Agree to put all contents in email (maybe except pictures ? depends ?).

On the possibility of writing a message in multiple languages, I agree it's nice but as most tools prefer today to duplicate post/page (wiki) for different languages, I'm not sure people will use this kind of features much. any stats of usage ?

I'm not asking for any immediate switch of forum but, as a distant traveller looking only in a glimpse on the technical aspect of BW, I had the impression, everything was recoded/repeated again even functions where there are already stuff (forum, wiki, ...). Just a way to ask ourselves, do we have enough taskforce to redo something whereas "acceptable" (to be defined) alternatives exist.

@juju2: "Just a way to ask ourselves, do we have enough taskforce to redo something whereas "acceptable" (to be defined) alternatives exist."

simple answer: no, we currently don't have enough people power to maintain, let alone extend the current collection of bewelcome components. :)

jsfan started a discussion on this somewhere (i think the developer mailing list), suggesting to replace at least the wiki software with something else. also because the wiki software is not maintained any more. i totally agree, and we should start thinking about how a wiki migration could be done. feel free to start a new thread about this.

as for the digest function, it would be nice to have, but right now i don't see anyone that has spare time to implement this. any volunteers?
