Hello people out there!

Berlin Couchsurfing/HospitalityClub/BeWelc
ome community has something to
announce:

Germany’s capital is going to host this year’s WinterCamp - in the tradition of
cities like Vilnius (LT) - 2004, Rīga (LV) - 2005, Warszawa (PL) - 2006 and
İstanbul (TR) - 2007!!!

Detailed information about the event is going to be released on our website
whose address will be published soon.

The event will take place from the 28th December 2008 until the early morning
hours of the 2nd January 2009 in a location called HomeBase Lounge in the heart
of Berlin close to Potsdamer Platz.

As a legal requirement the number of participants of the Berlin WinterCamp will
be limited to 450 people.

To make sure the event is not going to be overrun by Berliners only we will
reserve 250 tickets for people from abroad, 50 of those for a limited period for
people who require a visa.

People will be able to register for the camp as soon as the website is online
but keep in mind that you will only have a space guaranteed after you have paid
the required participation fee. Please make sure that you won’t book your travel
ticket until your space at the Camp is guaranteed!!!
Please keep in mind:
People younger
than 18 years have to leave the location each night prior to 0:00 o'clock if not
accompanied by a guardian!!!

The participation fee for the 6 days will be 35 € which includes 20 € of free
drinks at the bar:
0,33l Pils: 2,80€;
0.2l Red/White Wine: 3,50€;
0,33l Soft Drinks: 2,50€;
0,25l Mineral Water: 2,-€.

This 20 € is due to the fact
that we don’t need to pay a rent for the location but have to guarantee a
minimum revenue of 9.000 € within the five days.

The hosting of the participants will be done by
the Berlin community for which we will set up a system.

Even though we have a limit of 450 people
for the location the limit will not necessarily count for activities and
workshops outside of HomeBase Lounge.

Great to see the Berlin crew organizing this huge winter camp for this year. For all you guys who never celebrated on a winter camp... this is your chance... The funniest parts are the host pre-partys as you will probably sleep with 10 other guys somewhere in Berlin.

Ula!

Just for all of you who didn't noticed yet.

The BWC Crew opened a website about the process of the organisation and the way to participate as a volunteer or just simply how to attend the party.

35 euro sounds  a lot...

I like the idea, but this sounds to elitist ...

so maybe next time...

@morillo: I thought the same but it seems they have to cover some costs for new Years and the rooms to meet up. Still I would like to see some alternative meeting during WinterCamp. Some parts (I heard) will be open to not-registered-attendees anyway and there's no reason why we shouldn't meet up anyway!

yes, that would be nice, if there would be some meetings at the same time, where people meet up just for a couple of hours. Because my family lives in Berlin, and I really would like to join this camp for a day, or something... so what do you think will be free for everyone?

I'm not 100% sure.

There was a statement in this forum discussion where I ran into trouble:
http://www.couchsurfing.com/group_read.html?gid=14182&post=1837715#gpid1837715

But it's not clear yet what exactly will be open and what not - as far as I'm informed. But I'm sure, flofish knows better.

cheers

I agree with you morillo. 35 € for 5 days doesn't sound that much for 5 days but maybe for one night it will be a lot!

Yes, but you still have to pay the full 35€?."

I know the financial risk is quite hard in Berlin but a flexible payment (7per day) would suit to us the HC/CS/BW travel buddies much more ...

Out of my own experience with camps (BBC, Klöden) there is a small abuse rate with a flexible payment system (like ohh i pay just for one night, but will come back tomorrow morning to pay the rest ;)

I havn't registerd yet for 2 reasons:

I can't see attendees (need to register on the camp page, why?)

My plans are not 100% sure .. and the camp will be full in a couple of weeks anyway ;)

It's a pity that registration for the Berlin camp is limited to just a few hundred people. That prevents most of the European community as it now stands from even thinking about going.

I think there was a major change in the philosophies of hospex sites when camps started becoming less attended. I joined CS at the 2005/06 HC/CS Winter Camp in Riga, and so I had an opportunity to learn about the values of the CS community directly from some of its most important activists. Now, most members sign up for hospex sites and just read the sketchy information on the front page, and think they know what the site is all about with getting that personal direction from older members. They may go to local meetings, but often those meetings are organized by people who themselves have never been to camps.

If people could still get some introduction to the community from camps, you wouldn't be hearing crazy things like "CS/HC/BW isn't about free accomodation at all" (in Riga, everyone was honest that hospex is about free accomodation, but with great extra benefits like possible friendship and cultural exchange). New members would learn to be more tolerant of hitchhiking, soft drug use, or hook-ups, because those are all visible at camps.

Actually:

35 euro means 15 euro for entrance and 20 euro which you get back in vouchers for drinks.

we dont pay rent but had to promise to let 9000 euro at the place.

9000/450 participants is 20 euro each

so, we have 15 euro real entrance.

divided through 5day it is 3 euro each day.

and we have a lot of costs:

security, license to play music, insurance, money for workshops, renting projectors etc.

and of course we need some money for our own security cause calculations are always vague!

everything we have left over ge gonna give away to some organisations we still have to choose!

@ crculver

I didn't want to organize this years wintercamp but as no other city got active I said let's do it before the tradition dies!

it would have been nice if we could say, it doesn't matter how many people will come, but the only room available we could find has an maximum capacity of 450. Thats the only reason!!!

posted 2008/11/13 13:57    Visibility: World

@ crumbking

You can see the attendence list if you register on the webpage - you don't need to register for the payment process for that!

posted 2008/11/13 13:58    Visibility: World

and one thing more:

all workshops outside of the club are open for everybody.

the 450 is the limit for the club!

posted 2008/11/13 15:09    Visibility: World

@flofish,

can you maybe post a link with all the workshops which are not in the club, witch can be joined by everybody...

thanks

(Deutsche Fassungfolgt hinter der Englischen)

Berliners, Berliners, we - and 250 people from out of town - need you!

This New Year, over two hundred people from all over the world are coming to
Berlin to see YOU and YOUR City. They joined hospitality exchange clubs for the
same reason you did - to encounter new places, peoples, languages, food and
drink through the people who live there.

They have taken an emotional, intellectual, physical choice in the hope that you
feel the same as them, - *are* the same as them. They need *you*, - to
rediscover this great city together, to share a house together, to drink
together, to make friends and bring in the New Year together.

So where are you?

Not sure how to sign-up and pay? No worries, head over to
www.berlinwintercamp.org/user/register and sign-up. Now you're on the website.
Pay? No worries again, you can by pay by credit/debit card, PayPal, bank
transfer or by cash in-person to me or otupman at Berlin hospex events! Just
sign into the website and hit www.berlinwintercamp.org/payment and you're
starting our payment process!

In fact, members of the organiser team will be back at Belushi's on Friday
evening to answer your questions, talk about volunteering, and - of course - to
sign you up!

Worried that you're taking a space from a non-Berliner? Don't! Until we have
enough Berliners to host a large percentage of the people from out of town, we
can't let anyone else in!

But... saying that ... you're running out of time. The BWC team is sorry to
announce that you have until December 1st to make your decision. At that point
we will open a number of remaining spaces to *everyone*. And believe us, as soon
as the non-Berliners hear that, they'll be on them like flies. So hurry up!

Planning to travel in 2009? Why not make things easier for yourself and meet
some potential hosts for your travels. We have people coming from Finland,
Lithuania, Poland, Russia,.... etc. Show them a good time in Berlin and they
will surly return the favour when you visit them.

Not sure why it's 35EUR? 20EUR of that is free drinks at the bar of the venue
that we have! The rest, 15EUR for *five* days, covers all our other expenses -
security, music licensing, insurance, etc.

If you don't plan on attending WinterCamp, you can still help by hosting one or
more of our visitors! Have a look at the list of visitors to see who needs a
host "http://www.berlinwintercamp.org/surfers". Many, many visitors are looking
for Berlin hosts! You can also register for the site without committing to
attending WinterCamp and use all of the features of the WinterCamp website:
individual profile pages, hosting system, blogs, forums, up to date news, etc.
When signing up on the site, just enter the code "webonly" in the passport ID
field and you will be registered for the web site but not for the WinterCamp
event (though you can change this at any time by making a payment up until we
run out of available spaces).

Want to come? Got more questions? Confused?

Ask! You can reply here - the BWC organiser team are ever-present!

Even better, sign-up to the BWC website and then head over to our forums and ask
a question there.

Want the personal touch? e-mail us on registration@berlinwintercamp.org ! Or
just just send us a BW message!

No question too large, no request too silly, no offer for buying us drinks ever
denied ;)

The Berlin WinterCamp 2008 team, and those 250 people from out of town, would
love to see you.

Also - wo seid ihr?

Vielleicht noch unsicher, wie man sich registriert?
Kommt einfach auf unsere Website! Dort registriert ihr euch unter
www.berlinWinterCamp.org/user/register.

www.berlinWinterCamp.org/payment

Irland, England, Russland, Frankreich … etc.
