Partnership: after hitchwiki, wikitravel/wikivoyage ?

posted 2012/06/16 19:58    Visibility: World

After hitchwiki and better than re-inventing wheel/duplicate contents, for each location, wouldn't be better to link wikitravel/wikivoyage ?

Both are CC-BY-SA* but wikitravel is owned by private enterprise. On the other part, wikivoyage, today is only german and italian.

Comments ?

How do you want to link them ? As you said yourself, Wikitravel and Wikivoyage (I did not know the 2nd one) "belong"  to different persons/groups/enterprises. They are not event on the same language. I can add if I write the name of a country I like on wikivoyage, I don't find any page. Wikitravel seems about visiting regions countries etc..., not wikivoyage.

So, these two wikis first need to develop, and to get more known, But I don't see what should be interresting to "link" them and I don't see how.

How to link ?

http://www.bewelcome.org/wiki/Brussels ... agree it's a bit basic. link country and city, that's already a good help.

for BW and hitchwiki, see

http://www.bewelcome.org/forums/s1046-Hitchwiki_and_BeWelcome

http://hitchwiki.org/en/Hitchwiki:Integration_with_BeWelcome

http://hitchwiki.org/en/Hitchwiki_talk:Organization

Wikitravel/wikivoyage are like wikipedia or any wiki. they exist in the language their user/community want them so mainly en/de/ja (http://wikitravel.org/shared/Multilingual_statistics) and de/it. Either the link is in the language of the user, a default chosen one (with a warning for wikivoyage to point only existing supported lang)

Wikivoyage is a fork of wikitravel, initiated by german community with a similar reason than BW against CS. They have the same goal as travel guide. They are know by a certain public, see there stats (above and http://www.wikivoyage.org/general/Wikivoyage:Language_versions_statistics)

If it's not interesting, why mirror their sections

http://www.bewelcome.org/places/BE/Brussels%20Capital%20Region/Brussels (I have seen some page on BW with Get in / Get around / See / Do ... not found quickly).

is there any written documents about what to put in BW and avoiding repeating hitchwiki, wikitravel/wikivoyage or couchwiki.org ?

great idea! i am also not a big fan of the -mostly empty- wiki pages for our countries and places.

and yes, unfortunately wikitravel is a business since a while and wikivoyage not available in english - yet. but hitchwiki links are a nice idea.

but in fact i would have no problem with archiving the places wiki pages somewhere and getting rid of them in the places view altogether. *if* there is wiki content for a place, a link to that page could be displayed instead of the empty categories, as it is the case now, i.e. here: http://www.bewelcome.org/places/AZ

I don't know if you know it, but there is also http://couchwiki.org

This wiki is not very active at the moment, but if better promoted, it could develop into a great hospex travel guide  (also if it would have a different name)

I'd also like to see all public and not "bw-only" information about hospex in a public place. It's not useful to have redundant information (and redundant work) at different places. Hitchwiki and Wikitravel/-voyage have their special topics and although it's related, it's not the same.

About the name "couchwiki": In the beginning there have been different suggestions and even domains, if someone comes up with a better name - why not? Another domain could lead to couchwiki anyway, but I guess guaka (who is the admin) won't mind changing the name on the site as well.

Couchwiki is still more or less empty, but at least a regional structure and templates exist. So links from here should work, if not we'll change it.

Disclaimer: I'm a longtime user/sysop of couchwiki (although this is only cleaning out the spam for 2 years now ...).

Oh, and the people from Wikimedia are also discussing about a really free travel guide: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Travel_Guide (They have also registered some travel related domains recently).

Wikitravel is a business we probably tdon't want to touhc with a 3m pole. THey monetize the contributions of their volunteers with advertising, and they took a really long time to open their content with a permissive licence. It is very reminiscent of the CS management.

wikivoyage is probably going to get quite a boost from wikimedia integration (like, other languages..). And syndicating their It and De content would be already a good thing for the people that speak this language.

Is there a way to pull the data from wikis in a way that the version displayed on BW is up to date with that of the homewiki?
