Privacy simplified

posted 2012/06/16 19:36    Visibility: World

It would be nice to provide a simplified/visual equivalent of the "legal text" http://www.bewelcome.org/privacy

based on

https://www.eff.org/pages/who-has-your-back
http://yale.edu/self/psindex.html
http://privacycommons.org/

Also, could be added in settings a checkbox to ask user if he/she allows BW to share information with others in case of emergency and outside of legal request by police (in this case, forced). For example, if someone notice BW admin than someone is missing, it would allow BW to transfer the notice to police / embassy / familly or emergency contact (this latter field should really be added in profile, else BW has no way to exchange the information to relatives)

BW server is hosted in France and will soon be move in Germany. BW is managed by a French legal entity (BeVolunteer) which is to comply with French laws.

This mean that BeWelcome's Board of Directors must submit to an official French police request about any data about members in BW database. If you consider the "loi du 21 juin 2004" and its following legislative decree, it means every data about people activity including clear password (which looks to be impossible for password because they are not stored in clear in the DB...).

Because of this, I think this is useless, and could be unfair, to ask people agreement for such data transfer to police since they are no way to avoid them.

France, Germany are democracy this reduce the risk of police abuse, but I think you have an important point here which is to keep people informed about what can happen with their data.

It is also an opportunity to stress how important democracy is here (in France, in Germany, in BW) because depending on people are vigilant or just don't care this is and important point for privacy protection.

My point is not about hosting location or deep legal issue, but how to make legal documents more understable and provide information on how BW would react in some situation. It's certainly not about stacking new things to agree whereas I already think 99% of people don't read EULA & Privacy policy when registering somewhere.

This include: visual/simplified 4l equivalent of legal document, information of subscribers when change of policy (settings to disable if wanted), possibility of import/export data (see free data thread), if data are shared and who, following normal legal process request (unless notice/acceptance of user), be transparent about requests (depending on case, inform the users), ...

Note: Why the move of server france to germany ?

@juju2: "Why the move of server france to germany ?"

this was plainly done for technical and financial reasons. and to a small part due to the fact that the new host is using renewable energy. the new server is much faster and a little cheaper than the old one and most currently active sys admin volunteers (incl. myself) have very good experience with this german hosting company (hetzner).

as for the actual topic of this thread: i agree that this is important and it would be nice to have. if you could come up with a concrete proposal and help with the visual and technical implementation of this, there are good chances that it will make it to the site.

cheers, meinhard.
