Please say "BeWelcome" 50,000 times!

written by thorgal67 - 2013/10/10 21:37

Dear fellow travelers, guests and hosts,

We are happy to announce that a couple of days ago we signed up our 50,000th member. It seems that the sudden increase in membership we have seen over the last year has turned into a constant organic growth, for which we are extremely grateful.

BeWelcome was never created to become the biggest hospex network, and we will always choose quality over quantity. That is why we recently decided to hide all "inactive" members from the default member search and to remove members without a valid email address from our statistics.

Do you want to find members? Then please check out our new simplified member search and our updated country statistics.

So get your travel boots on, arrange a meeting in your town or open your home to strangers and see the world!

Great news! And I fully agree about 'slow organic growth' and 'quality over quantity'.

Not to mention the other website here but I suspect today's discouraging news for them will lead to another spike in our membership statistics here...

BePrepare to handle the growth ?

50 000 hosts or guests is a good news, probably only one third are potentially active but it is still a good new, BeWelcome has reach another important step

I think that now, it is time to think about growth consequencies.

Hospitalityclub has failed, Couchsurfing is in some kind of turmoil, BeWelcome has some big difference, but must start thinking about a more complex situation, a future with many members, many opportinities and some problems which goes with it.

We must keep this transparency, non commercial and open goals and also we need to become more professional. There is some time for it but it also can go fast.

Next short step is the BeVolunteer (official association behind BeWelcome) annual GA, and to stress one point, for example we need volunteers for the next BoD

remove members without a valid email address from our statistics.

To remove members without a valid email address from our statistics is very sincerly , but is it enouch ? such a account can have a last login mark as 14 days , 7 months , 2 years.
A surfer trying to contacts such host is wasting their time waiting for reply , some kind of note on thoose account should be good !!
An account setup for 3years ago, last login 2 years ago musn't be a dead mail. With the right setup of subscriptions and groups that person could get all information they wants without loging in.

Quality vs Quantity

If we have to choose, then definitely quality.

But I dont think we have to choose and indeed, to be "quality" BW also needs to have critical mass in all the places we all want to go to!

So if each of us find 1-2 friends who we know are in alignment with BW, that would be very fast growth and high quality too.

I've done one and it was very easy. So will keep trying.

A "member get member" e-mail system would be very helpful - excuse me if it already exists.

@Rajji: yes, there is already a "member get member" e-mail system.

It is called "Invite a Friend" and can be found here:
