Some fun things to do in Jamaica

written by bluemountainrasta - 2012/04/17 05:54

A friend of mine put this together for those who visit me. Take a look...

Some of my favorite things to do in Jamaica.

Treasure Beach Area:
Pelican Bar - Tiki-hut style bar on a sandbar about 1 mile off the south coast of JA.
Lover's Leap - Great view from a highpoint looking over the south sea. Jamaican folklore about this spot exists.
Appleton Rum Distillery - Enough said. Nice tours available.
YS Falls - A nice local waterfall.
Mayfield Falls - Less touristy waterfall.
Jake's - Great hotel with moderate prices and a lot of personality. Restaurant serves really good locally sourced meals!
Jack Sprat - Great seafood and pizza place next door to Jake's hotel. Best pizza in the country.
Frenchman's Reef - Inexpensive restaurant on the beach. Lots of variety of food, and super friendly owners.

Blue Mountains:
The Peak - Climb the blue mountain peak and see the sun rise over the island. You will have to rough it, but I highly recommend this experience!
Coffee Farm Tour - see a working local coffee farm and have some of the best coffee in the world.

Negril:
Rick's Cafe - one of the most popular bar / grills in Negril. On a steep cliff overlooking the water. Cliff divers put on a show and you can jump too.
Half Moon Beach: Nice private beach on the north side of Negril. DO have to pay for admittance, but not overrun. Nice spot for a relaxing lunch.
Magaritaville - Expensive American party scene. Quiet place to get lunch during the day and use a nice clean and safe beach front.

Montego Bay:
Hip Strip: A touristy but dangerous spot in Montego Bay. Not everyone's scene.
Airport: Will likely fly into here. Beware of taxi drivers hustling outside. Call the hotel ahead of time and find out about inexpensive transportation options.
Rose Hall: Old Jamaican Plantation house with lots of history. Tours available. Golf course is also here. Very expensive!
Doctor's Beach - Nice private beach. Pay for entrance. Pictured on the back of the JA$100 bill
Beware when in Montego bay. If there is a cruise ship in port and you are white, prepare to get hustled.

Falmouth area:
Martha Brae River Rafting - Peaceful ride down the Martha Brae river on a private bamboo raft. Not cheap but VERY fun and extremely chill.
Glistening waters - Luminescent lagoon. The water looks like an indiglo watch at night. Truly amazing. Make sure to go after sunset and when the moon is less visible, take a tour boat and swim in the glowing water.
Leroy's Reggae Spot - Really fun, no frills, authentic Jamaican seaside bar located on Jacob Taylor Beach in Duncans. Catch live reggae music on Saturday nights and experience a real melting pot of tourists and Jamaicans.
Good Hope Plantation - Old Jamaican Plantation house. Take a horse back ride through the orange groves or check out David Pinto's pottery studio on the grounds.
Lots of other touristy businesses like atvs, horse back riding on the beach, etc.

Ocho Rios:
Beware when in Ocho Rios. If there is a cruise ship in port and you are white, prepare to get hustled.
Dunns River falls - Lots of people do this. I think it is the least attractive water fall in Jamaica. Go just about anywhere else.
Bob Marley's Mausoleum - See Bob Marley's mausoleum as well as a house Bob and Rita Marley once shared. It is located in Nine Mile, a drive south of Ocho Rios.

Some really fun things to do in general:
Go to a concert. Concerts in Jamaica are cheap. Usually about USD$10 for General Admission. $20 for VIP. Where else can you see world famous musicians perform for $10?!
Stop at a roadside party. Roadside parties pop up on Fridays and Saturdays. Usually a car with an INSANE sound system will be rented by a bar and the party starts itself. Make sure to go with people you trust and not alone.
Get some beach time. Travel can take a long time in Jamaica. If you are not careful, you can spend all of your time in a car and come back home without a tan. The beach is beautiful, so enjoy it.
Stop for some roadside fruit. Jamaicans often sell their product on the roadside. Make sure to get a jelly (water coconut), ganips (sp?), oranges, jamaican apple, etc.

Side notes:
This list really only discusses things to do on the western half of the island.
Be safe. If you are white, it is clear you are not a local. Be smart. Don't be flashy!
Remember to just say NO to those trying to aggressively sell you something you don't want or charge you too much for something you do.
Jamaican Patois (their dialect) can be very hard to understand. Although technically English, this dialect can be spoken in such a way that foreigners have no chance of understanding it.
"Soon come" is a Jamaican phrase that essentially means to wait a little bit longer. Unfortunately, this phrase and attitude does not always sit well with foreigners. Relax, remember where you are, sit back, and enjoy yourself. I promise it is not the end of the world that your jerk chicken wont be ready for 5 more minutes.

Hope this is helpful.

Jah Bless!!!
