Switch to OpenStreetMap and bug fixes released

written by planetcruiser - 2012/12/14 07:37

Hello everyone,

it has long been in the making, a bit more than two months, but we hope this was worth the wait:

  • Complete overhaul of all maps - we are now using free and open source OpenStreetMap as our default map, with the option to switch back to a Google Maps view
  • Many, many bug fixes in map and city searches along the way
  • Group membership management improvements

There are a few more smaller changes and improvements. Read more details in the complete changelog, if you are interested.

With this release we are taking another step towards supporting the non-profit world by including work from other volunteer-run projects into our site. We feel this is worth a press release, which will be sent out shortly. Stay tuned.

Thanks fly out to abyssin, beatnickgr, crumbking, lantti, James_Oder_Dave, jsfan, mahoun200000, matthias, midsch, pablobd, sanderr, shevek and toub for making this release possible by testing, commenting and contributing code. We would also like to thank Cloudmade for supplying their fantastic free API service to embed OpenStreetMap material into any website.

Let us know what you think about these changes in the comments below!

May non-profit hospitality exchange prevail! :)

Nice! But how do you explain that the non-Google map won't work unless you don't allow Googleapsis' scriptings and Google's gstatic. Why? What do these do? Still spying for Google?

Map bug?

If you search for members in Dnipropetrovs'k, Ukraine, with the map stuff you won't find them, browsing countries - they are there!
Well done: several different transcriptions are working here!

@ Krischaan: As written in the post you can still switch back to google map. Reason is that the OSM map is great in Europe, America and bigger places but in some countries it's almost empty. Therefore user could switch back to google. But one day we will remove it :-)

It's alive! Well done!

A big thanks to all developpers, testers, translators, designers.... who made this possible.
And also thanks to the millions of people who are helping day-by-day improving the OpenStreetMap content.

But why then...

... have I to allow the Google stuff scriptings (they are blocked on my comp by default) before I can use the ***OpenStreetMap***?
